Carpet Extractors in Water Damage Restoration

Commercial Carpet ExtractorWater damage can be nothing short of devastating.  Whether it be a flood, burst pipe, faulty toilet, or a dishwasher deciding to misbehavior, water damage is a serious issue that must be addressed immediately.  Another thing to keep in mind is that most insurance policies do not cover water damage as this insurance coverage must be purchased separately.  If you have water damage insurance it can provide not only peace of mind but also foot the (considerable) bill of the damage.  This kind of mess calls for a certain type of cleaning:  water extraction.  A thorough water extraction cleaning consists of reducing the water to prevent mold and secondary damage by using powerful pumps and vacuum units which also reduce the dry time on carpets.

Types of Damage

The various types of water damage can call for specialized extraction services.  Things to consider are damage to carpets, water intrusion, flood classification, flooring warranties, carpet cushioning, floor padding, the underlying layers of hardwood/laminate flooring, and what kind of water/flooding a person has encountered.  Damage to carpets is the most difficult situation to face as each situation has to be evaluated on a case by case basis since each one will have its own set of problems.  This is why what type of flooding happened comes into account:  sanitary, unsanitary, or black water.

Sanitary flooding is categorized as excess water damage with (fairly) clean water.  After the water is extracted the carpet or flooring must be treated with a cleaning and disinfectant solution to kill any microbes that could be present.  Traffic on wet flooring should be kept to a minimum until the surface is completely dry.  It is also imperative to find and cut off the water source before any extraction takes place otherwise drying out the flooring is a moot point.  Extraction of excess water should begin immediately after the flooding and the flooring (especially carpet) should be completely dry within 12 hours of beginning intervention.  Unsanitary flooding is defined as water having some type of contamination such as dishwasher overflows, toilet overflows with urine present, punctured waterbeds, or any other water source that might contain biopollutants.  In this case it is recommended to replace carpet due to sanitation concerns, but it can be restored with water extraction and proper disinfectants.

The most severe type of flooding is black water, or any water that contains raw sewage.  Sea water is also considered black water, making flooding that involves this type of water equally serious.  Black water is extremely hazardous and can result in serious health effects.  All flooring materials must be discarded and other surfaces carefully evaluated to accurately assess the damage.  It is recommended that porous surfaces be removed and discarded due to health concerns.  When a cleaning team is working with an unsanitary or black water flood, they must take precautions to protect their health including protective clothing such as rubber gloves, boots, goggles, and any other necessary gear.  Even with this gear, a person with cuts or open sores should avoid these flood waters.
