XTreme Power 11500SE

XTreme Power 11500SEWhen a house floods, water wreaks havoc on everything inside. Water and bacteria compromise personal belongings, the structure of the house itself and the health of the interior environment. Floodwater carrys mud, sludge and contaminants that do more than just soak everything it touches. It ruins most items it meets. Even just an inch of floodwater in a home is enough to ruin flooring, wallboard, furniture and appliances. More severe flooding causes even more damage and expense when rising water breeches electrical systems, ducts, heating/AC units and sewage systems.

Cleaning up after a flood is a drawn out, tedious process. We all like to think flooding could never happen to us, but if it does, rest assured we have the equipment you need, along with the following tips below, to return your home to its original glory.

How to Clean and Sanitize your Home after a Flood

  • Before you begin cleaning, contact your insurance agent. Take pictures and video of the damages and keep a running list of all the things damaged or ruined by the flood.
  • Mud/sludge: Remove as much mud from your home as possible using a shovel or our XTreme Power 11500SE Sludge Extractor. Once that is done, use a garden hose to rinse away mud from hard surfaces.
  • Clean and disinfect: Using hot water and a heavy-duty detergent wash all surfaces. Disinfect cleaned surfaces with a solution of ¼-cup bleach to one gallon of water to kill germs.
  • In the kitchen: Use 2 tablespoons bleach to one gallon of water to soak dishes for 10 minutes. Allow dishes to air dry. Boil pots, pans and metal utensils such as silverware in water to disinfect because bleach often reacts with metals causing them to darken. Clean cupboards and cabinets with a bleach solution before storing dishes in them.
  • Furniture and other belongings:
  • Remove all furniture, bedding, rugs and clothing from the home and place outside to dry. Use air conditioning or fans to dry the inside of your home as quickly as possible to prevent mold and mildew. If mold or mildew is already present, vacuum as much of it as possible and clean with bleach solution. Be sure to wear protective gear while doing this to avoid breathing mold spores.
  • Take upholstered furniture to a professional only for cleaning.
  • Throw all contaminated mattresses away and buy new ones.
  • Throw away any toys and stuffed animals contaminated by floodwaters.
  • Freeze books, pictures and important papers in Ziploc bags until you are able to clean them or take them to a professional. This will prevent mold and mildew until you can focus on them.
